What Do the Warning Lights on Your Kia Mean?

Understanding the Lights on Your Kia Dashboard

You’re driving through Lincoln when a symbol suddenly appears on your Kia’s instrument panel.

Is it something that needs immediate attention? Is your vehicle simply reminding you that a system is active? Can you keep driving?

Dashboard lights can communicate everything from low tire pressure to a potentially serious engine or braking-system concern. Kia itself maintains an indicator-light guide covering systems including TPMS, ABS, engine oil pressure, charging, airbags, engine temperature and Electronic Stability Control.

Here’s a practical guide to some of the Kia dashboard lights you’re most likely to encounter.

Check Engine or Malfunction Indicator Light

The Malfunction Indicator Light, commonly called the check-engine light, indicates that your vehicle has detected a problem associated with the engine, emissions or related systems.

A steady check-engine light does not necessarily mean your engine is about to fail, but it shouldn’t simply be ignored.

A flashing check-engine light can indicate a more urgent problem. Reduce unnecessary driving and have the vehicle evaluated promptly.

The exact cause requires diagnosis rather than guessing from the light alone.

Engine Oil Pressure Warning Light

The oil-pressure warning deserves immediate attention.

It can indicate that engine oil pressure is too low to properly lubricate the engine.

If the oil-pressure warning remains illuminated while the engine is running, safely pull over and turn off the engine as soon as conditions permit. Consult your owner’s manual and arrange assistance as appropriate rather than continuing to drive and risking engine damage.

Engine Coolant Temperature Warning

An engine-temperature warning can indicate that the engine is overheating.

Continuing to drive an overheating vehicle can result in serious damage. Safely stop the vehicle as soon as practical and follow the procedures in your owner’s manual.

Never remove a radiator or coolant-system cap while the system is hot.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Light

The TPMS warning commonly appears when one or more tires are significantly underinflated.

Nebraska’s changing temperatures can make this light particularly familiar. Tire pressure decreases as temperatures fall, so the first cold stretch of the season can expose tires that were already close to the recommended minimum pressure.

Check all four tires when they’re appropriately cooled and inflate them according to the pressure specified for your vehicle—not the maximum pressure printed on the tire sidewall.

A TPMS light that flashes before remaining illuminated may indicate a problem with the monitoring system itself.

ABS Warning Light

The Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) warning indicates a problem has been detected with the ABS.

Your vehicle may retain conventional braking capability, but the anti-lock function may not operate normally. Because braking systems are safety-critical, have the vehicle inspected rather than putting off the warning.

Kia separately identifies ABS, parking-brake/brake-fluid and Electronic Brake Force Distribution warnings in its indicator-light guide.

Brake Warning Light

A brake-system warning can have several possible meanings, including an engaged parking brake or a brake-system/fluid concern.

If the light remains on after you’ve confirmed that the parking brake is fully released, don’t assume it’s harmless. Consult the owner’s manual for your specific Kia and have the braking system checked when appropriate.

Airbag Warning Light

The airbag warning light relates to the Supplemental Restraint System.

If it remains illuminated after startup or appears while driving, the system should be inspected. A fault could affect the operation of airbags or related restraint components in a collision.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Light

ESC helps the driver maintain control when the system detects a difference between the vehicle’s intended direction and its actual movement.

If the ESC indicator flashes while you’re driving, that can simply mean the system is actively working.

If the warning stays illuminated, however, it can indicate a system malfunction.

You’ll also see a separate ESC OFF indicator when the system has been manually disabled. Kia identifies both indicators in its official guide.

Battery or Charging-System Warning

On a gasoline-powered Kia, the charging-system warning does not simply mean that you need a new battery.

It can indicate that the vehicle’s charging system isn’t operating properly, potentially involving the battery, alternator, belt, wiring or another component.

If the charging system isn’t replenishing the battery while you drive, the vehicle can eventually lose electrical power.

EV Warning Lights Are Different

Kia EVs have additional indicators associated with their high-voltage systems.

For example, Kia’s EV6 documentation includes a high-voltage battery-level warning, EV Service warning, regenerative-braking warning and Power Down warning. The EV Service warning can indicate a malfunction related to the electric-vehicle control system.

EV owners should consult the manual for their specific model rather than applying gasoline-vehicle advice to an EV warning.

Red, Yellow and Green: A Useful General Rule

As a general guide:

Red often indicates something requiring immediate attention.

Yellow or amber generally means a system needs attention or inspection.

Green, blue or white often indicates that a feature or system is operating.

But color alone isn’t enough to diagnose a problem. The same-looking symbol can have different implications depending on whether it flashes, remains continuously illuminated or appears alongside another warning.
