Understanding Kia’s Extended Rear View Camera Settings

January 26th, 2026 by

If you’ve ever noticed your rear view camera staying on the screen after shifting out of Reverse, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common questions Kia owners ask—and the good news is that your vehicle is likely working exactly as designed. Many newer Kia models come equipped with an Extended Rear View Camera, a smart safety feature created to give drivers more awareness in slow-moving, crowded situations like parking lots, school pickup zones, or after a concert or sporting event. Let’s break down what this feature does, why it exists, and how you can easily adjust it to fit your driving preferences.

Why Does the Rear View Camera Stay On?
On Kia vehicles equipped with the Extended Rear View Camera, the rear camera image is designed to remain on the infotainment screen even after shifting out of Reverse (R) and into Neutral (N) or Drive (D). The camera view will stay active until the vehicle exceeds approximately 6 mph, allowing drivers to:

  • Monitor pedestrians, carts, or vehicles behind them

  • Roll forward safely in tight or busy parking areas

  • Maintain better situational awareness at low speeds

This is especially useful when inching forward after backing out of a parking space.

Prefer the Traditional Camera Behavior?
Not everyone wants the extended display—and that’s perfectly fine. Kia allows drivers to turn this feature on or off directly through the infotainment system. When disabled, the rear view camera will behave traditionally, meaning:

  • The camera image appears only while the vehicle is in Reverse

  • The display disappears immediately once you shift out of Reverse
