Kia Telluride vs. Sorento: Which 3-Row Kia Should You Choose?

October 9th, 2026 by

If you’re shopping for a three-row Kia SUV, there’s a good chance you’ll eventually find yourself comparing the Sorento and Telluride.

At first glance, they seem to solve the same problem. Both offer three rows, modern technology, available all-wheel drive and plenty of family-friendly features.

But they’re actually designed for somewhat different buyers.

The easiest way to think about the difference is this:

The Sorento provides three-row flexibility in a more manageable midsize package.

The Telluride puts greater emphasis on passenger space, third-row use and cargo capacity.

And with the arrival of the all-new 2027 Telluride, there are some significant differences shoppers should understand. Kia’s current lineup also identifies the 2027 Sorento, including available turbocharged, hybrid and plug-in-hybrid powertrains.

Start With the Third Row

This is probably the most important question:

How often will you actually use your third row?

The Sorento is an excellent option for someone who wants the flexibility of a third row without needing maximum passenger room every day.

Think about a family that normally travels with four people but occasionally needs room for additional kids, friends or relatives. Having that extra row available can be extremely useful.

Telluride moves farther toward being a true three-row family vehicle.

The 2027 Telluride offers seating for up to eight passengers in applicable configurations and provides 43 inches of second-row legroom and 32.1 inches in the third row.

The current Sorento provides 41.7 inches of second-row legroom and 29.6 inches in the third row.

A few inches can sound insignificant on paper. Put passengers in all three rows and the difference becomes much easier to understand.

Telluride Gives You More Cargo Space Behind the Third Row

Here’s another major difference for families.

It’s easy to say a vehicle has three rows. The bigger question is how much room remains for cargo when all three rows are occupied.

The 2027 Telluride provides 22.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. Fold the seats and Kia lists 48.7 cubic feet behind the second row and 89.3 cubic feet behind the first.

The current Sorento lists 12.6 cubic feet behind the third row, with 38.5 to 45 cubic feet behind the second row depending on seating position and 75.5 cubic feet behind the first row.

That’s a meaningful difference if you regularly need all three rows and need space for groceries, luggage, sports equipment or a stroller.

If your third row is usually folded, Sorento’s cargo flexibility may be plenty.

If your third row is usually occupied, Telluride’s additional cargo room becomes much more valuable.

Sorento’s Smaller Size Can Be an Advantage

Bigger isn’t automatically better.

Some shoppers prefer Sorento precisely because it isn’t as large as Telluride.

A smaller three-row SUV can be easier to maneuver in parking lots, easier to fit into a garage and simply feel more manageable in everyday driving.

If your third row is something you want available rather than something you expect to use constantly, you may not need the additional size of Telluride.

That’s why we encourage shoppers to drive both instead of assuming the larger SUV is automatically the better one.

The Powertrain Choices Are Very Different

This is another area where Sorento stands out.

The current Sorento lineup offers a 2.5-liter four-cylinder producing 191 horsepower in applicable trims and an available turbocharged 2.5-liter engine producing 281 horsepower and 311 lb.-ft. of torque. Kia’s broader current lineup also includes Sorento hybrid and plug-in-hybrid choices.

The redesigned 2027 Telluride uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter gasoline engine producing 274 horsepower and 311 lb.-ft. of torque. Kia also now offers a Telluride Turbo-Hybrid producing 329 horsepower and 339 lb.-ft. of torque.

That means shoppers interested in electrification no longer have to choose Sorento simply because they want a hybrid three-row Kia.

However, Sorento still provides a particularly broad range of powertrain options, including plug-in-hybrid availability.

What About Towing?

If towing is part of your plans, compare the specific configuration you’re considering rather than looking only at the model name.

The 2027 gasoline Telluride can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped, while Kia lists up to 4,500 pounds for the Telluride Hybrid.

Sorento towing capability varies by engine, drivetrain and equipment, so this is an area where it’s particularly important to match the exact vehicle configuration to what you intend to tow.

Never base a towing decision solely on a generic model specification. Trailer weight, cargo, passengers, tongue weight and vehicle equipment all matter.

Both Offer Plenty of Technology

You don’t have to choose Telluride simply because you want modern technology.

Current Sorento models offer features including available Dual Panoramic Displays, Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, and a variety of driver-assistance technologies depending on trim.

The new Telluride pushes the digital experience farther, with an available cockpit providing nearly 30 inches of combined digital displays along with Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Available Telluride equipment also includes features such as multiple USB-C charging ports across all three rows, tri-zone climate control and Passenger Talk on applicable configurations.

Rather than comparing which vehicle has the longest feature list, compare the specific trims you’re considering. Many technology differences come down to trim level and option packages rather than simply Sorento versus Telluride.

Nebraska Drivers Should Consider AWD

Both models deserve consideration if available all-wheel drive is important to you.

The Sorento offers available AWD, including Terrain Mode with Snow, Sand and Mud settings on applicable AWD configurations.

The Telluride also offers available all-wheel drive and terrain-oriented equipment, with the new X-Pro taking the capability side of the lineup even farther.

All-wheel drive doesn’t eliminate the need for appropriate tires or careful winter driving, but it’s understandably a feature many Lincoln-area shoppers want on their SUV.

So, Sorento or Telluride?

Instead of asking which SUV is “better,” ask how you’ll use it.

Take a closer look at the Sorento if: you want three rows but expect to use the third row only occasionally; prefer a somewhat smaller vehicle for everyday driving; value having multiple powertrain choices; or don’t need maximum cargo room with every seat occupied.

Take a closer look at the Telluride if: you regularly transport six, seven or eight people; expect adults or older children to use the third row; need more cargo room while all three rows are occupied; or simply want a larger three-row SUV.

The numbers tell part of the story. Your family tells the rest.

Bring Your Family When You Compare Them

This is one comparison that’s much easier to make in person.

Bring the kids. Bring the car seats. If you regularly carry a stroller, sports equipment or other large items, bring those too.

Sit in the third row.

Move the second-row seats.

Open the liftgate with all three rows in use.

Then drive both vehicles.

A specification sheet can tell you that Telluride has 22.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third row compared with 12.6 cubic feet in the Sorento.

Only your family can tell you whether that difference matters.
