How to Use Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) in Your Kia EV9 or EV6

Turn Your Kia EV Into a Mobile Power Source

One of the most useful features available on the Kia EV9 and EV6 is one you may not use every day—but you’ll appreciate it when you need it.

Vehicle-to-Load, commonly called V2L, allows a properly equipped Kia EV9 or EV6 to use energy stored in its high-voltage battery to power compatible electrical devices.

That means your Kia can do more than take you from one place to another. With V2L, you can use your EV to power certain electronics and appliances while camping, tailgating, working outdoors or dealing with a temporary power outage.

Here’s how it works.

What Is Kia Vehicle-to-Load?

Vehicle-to-Load allows energy stored in your Kia’s high-voltage battery to be supplied to external electrical devices.

Depending on your vehicle and equipment, Kia provides interior and exterior ways to access V2L power. On the EV6, for example, Kia’s current feature guide describes an interior V2L outlet under the rear seat and exterior V2L capability through the vehicle’s charging port. The system can provide up to 1.9 kW, or 1,900 watts, according to Kia. Features and operation can vary by model year and equipment, so check your owner’s manual for your specific EV.

Think of it as a large portable power source that happens to be built into your vehicle.

• Laptops and mobile devices
• Lights
• Small appliances
• Electric bicycles
• Camping equipment
• Tailgating equipment
• Power tools

Always check the electrical requirements of the device before connecting it and follow the V2L instructions and safety precautions in your Kia owner’s manual.

How to Use the Exterior V2L Connection

On a properly equipped EV6, Kia’s current instructions call for using a V2L connector with the vehicle’s charging inlet.

The basic process is:

1. Park your Kia safely and make sure you have sufficient battery charge.
2. Open the vehicle’s charging door.
3. Open the cover on the compatible V2L connector.
4. Connect the electrical device you want to power to the V2L connector.
5. Insert the V2L connector into the vehicle’s charging inlet.
6. Press the power button on the V2L connector.
7. Confirm that the system is supplying power before using your connected device.

Exact procedures can differ between the EV6, EV9, model years and equipment, so your owner’s manual should always be your final reference.

Set a Battery Discharge Limit Before You Start

This is one of the most important V2L features to understand.

You probably don’t want to power your campsite all night and discover the next morning that you’ve used more of your driving battery than intended.

Kia allows the driver to establish a minimum battery charge level for V2L operation. When the high-voltage battery reaches the selected limit, V2L automatically stops supplying power.

On the current EV6 feature guide, this setting is found through the EV menu and V2L/electricity-use settings in the infotainment system.

Before using V2L for an extended period, choose a minimum charge level that leaves you comfortable with the remaining driving range you’ll need.

Using the Interior V2L Outlet

Properly equipped models can also provide V2L power inside the vehicle.

For the EV6, Kia identifies the interior outlet beneath the rear seat and notes that the EV POWER function must be on for the outlet to operate.

This can be convenient when you want to power compatible electronics without connecting an exterior adapter.

Again, location and operation can vary by model and model year.

How Much Can V2L Power?

Kia lists a maximum V2L output of 1.9 kW (1,900 watts) in its 2026 EV6 feature guide.

That’s enough for many everyday electrical devices, but it does not mean every appliance or combination of appliances is appropriate.

Check the wattage requirements of anything you connect, and don’t exceed the vehicle’s rated V2L capacity. Appliances with motors, compressors or heating elements can also have higher startup loads than their normal operating wattage.

Why V2L Is Especially Useful in Nebraska

V2L is a good example of EV technology providing a benefit that goes beyond fuel savings or charging.

Imagine taking your EV9 on a Nebraska camping weekend and powering lights and compatible equipment directly from the vehicle. Or using your EV6 to run equipment at a tailgate without bringing a separate portable generator.

It can also provide access to limited electrical power during some temporary outages, although V2L should not be confused with a permanently installed whole-home backup power system.
