Best Kia SUVs for Families: Which One Fits Your Family?
Choosing a family SUV isn’t simply about finding the biggest vehicle you can afford. The better question is what your family actually needs from it.
How many people ride with you every day? Do you need a third row? How much cargo do you carry? Are your children still in car seats? Do you regularly make road trips? Would you rather have maximum passenger space or something smaller and easier to maneuver around Lincoln?
Kia’s SUV lineup provides several very different answers to those questions, including the Seltos, Sportage, Sorento, Telluride and all-electric EV9.
Here’s how to think about the choices.
Kia Seltos: Great for Smaller Families
Families don’t automatically need three rows.
For parents with one or two children who want SUV versatility without driving a large vehicle, the Kia Seltos can make a lot of sense.
The all-new 2027 Seltos is a compact SUV with seating for five and a redesigned interior emphasizing passenger and cargo space. Kia says the new model offers best-in-class interior volume and class-leading maximum cargo room within its competitive class.
Its smaller exterior dimensions can also make it easier to maneuver and park than a larger three-row SUV.
Available all-wheel drive is particularly attractive for Nebraska drivers who want additional capability when winter weather arrives.
The Seltos is a good place to start if your priorities are affordability, maneuverability, useful cargo space and available AWD rather than third-row seating.
Kia Sportage: More Room Without Moving to Three Rows
The Sportage is another strong option for a five-passenger household, particularly when rear-seat and cargo room are high priorities.
The 2026 Sportage offers 41.3 inches of second-row legroom, which Kia identifies as class-leading, along with class-leading cargo room in its segment.
That extra second-row space can be especially valuable as children get older—or when adults regularly ride in the back.
The Sportage also offers available all-wheel drive and available technologies including Dual Panoramic Displays, 360° Surround View Monitor and Blind-Spot View Monitor.
For many families who don’t need a third row, Sportage hits an appealing middle ground between compact dimensions and generous interior space.
Kia Sorento: The Flexible Three-Row Choice
What if you occasionally need more than five seats but don’t necessarily want one of Kia’s largest SUVs?
That’s where Sorento becomes especially interesting.
The Sorento offers three-row versatility in a footprint that can be easier to manage than a larger family SUV. It’s also available with multiple powertrain choices depending on model and configuration, including turbocharged, hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.
For a family that uses the third row occasionally—for friends, grandparents or extra kids—the Sorento can provide the flexibility you’re looking for without automatically moving into a full-size family vehicle.
It’s also worth considering if you want three rows but still place a high priority on everyday maneuverability.
Kia Telluride: For Families Who Regularly Need Three Rows
Telluride has become one of the most recognizable vehicles in Kia’s lineup for a reason.
The newest generation continues to focus heavily on three-row passenger comfort and family-friendly utility. The 2027 Telluride lineup offers three-row seating, and Kia describes the model as providing seating for up to eight passengers depending on configuration.
If you regularly carry six, seven or eight people, the difference between occasionally having a third row and actually needing one every day matters.
Telluride is better suited to families that expect to use all three rows regularly and want a vehicle designed around that requirement.
For shoppers interested in electrification, Kia has also introduced a Telluride Hybrid. The 2027 Telluride Hybrid provides seating for up to seven and offers family-friendly touches such as USB-C outlets in all three rows and second-row seats designed to provide easier third-row access.
Kia EV9: The Three-Row Electric Family SUV
Families interested in going fully electric don’t have to give up three-row SUV practicality.
The Kia EV9 provides three-row seating and, on applicable configurations, seating for up to seven passengers. The 2026 model offers as much as 81.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the first row with the rear seats folded.
That combination makes the EV9 unusual: it’s an electric vehicle that can realistically serve as a primary family SUV rather than simply a second commuter vehicle.
Of course, choosing an EV also means considering your driving habits, home-charging options and typical road-trip needs. For the right household, however, EV9 offers an intriguing combination of passenger capacity, technology and electric driving.
Which Kia SUV Is Right for Your Family?
There’s no single answer because “family vehicle” means something different to every household.
If you have a smaller family and value easy maneuverability, start with the Seltos.
If you want a spacious two-row SUV with excellent rear-seat and cargo room, take a closer look at the Sportage.
If you’d like three rows but don’t need maximum passenger capacity every day, Sorento deserves serious consideration.
If you routinely use three rows and carry a larger family, Telluride should be on your shopping list.
And if you want three-row practicality with an all-electric powertrain, EV9 offers something very different from the rest of the lineup.
The easiest way to decide is to see them side by side.
Bring the Whole Family to Kia of Lincoln
Specs can tell you how many seats a vehicle has. They can’t tell you whether your car seats fit comfortably, whether your teenager likes the third row or whether your stroller leaves enough room for groceries.
That’s why we encourage families to bring the things—and the people—they actually travel with when shopping for a vehicle.
At Kia of Lincoln, you can compare Kia SUVs in person and find the combination of passenger room, cargo space, technology and capability that works for your household.
